AI colorize black and white manga

Color e-readers arrived, and most manga is still drawn in black and white. The planned colorization tool uses a learned model to paint grey pages plausibly, so a Kindle Colorsoft or Kobo Libra Colour has something to show for its panel. We are being straight with you twice over: the tool is not live yet, so this page does not offer it, and AI color is an interpretation, not the artist’s palette, which the page will keep saying after it ships.

Colorization models are genuinely good at flats and skin tones and genuinely erratic on screentone-heavy action pages, which is most manga. The plan is preview-first: you would see the colorized pages before committing a volume, the same discipline the converter applies to everything else.

What AI colorization will do

  1. Paint the page with a learned model

    Character-consistent colors across a chapter, flats where the art wants flats, and no color at all where the model cannot be confident.

  2. Preview before you commit

    Colorized pages render for inspection first, so a chapter where the model loses the plot never reaches your device unseen.

  3. Convert for a color device

    The painted pages flow into the same pipeline with a color profile, sized and tuned for the Colorsoft, Libra Colour or Clara Colour panel.

  4. Until then: real color survives conversion today

    Manga and comics that already have color pages keep them when you convert with a color device profile. That part is live now.

Honesty first

We will not ship a colorize button that produces mush on screentone and call it done. The feature arrives with a per-page preview and honest wording about what AI color is.

The live tools help now

Color profiles for the Colorsoft and color Kobos are live: existing color pages convert beautifully today, and grayscale pages convert crisply, which is the honest baseline until the model earns its place.

Frequently asked questions

Can I colorize manga here right now?

Not yet, and we will not pretend otherwise. Colorization is planned. What is live today: converting color material for color e-readers, with the color kept and tuned for the panel.

Will it look like an official color edition?

No. Official color editions are colored by people who know the story and the palette. AI color is a plausible guess, sometimes lovely, sometimes wrong about a character’s hair in chapter three. The preview exists so you judge before it ships to your device.

Does colorization make sense on a grayscale e-reader?

No, a grayscale panel would just convert the invented color straight back to grey. This feature targets the color devices; on grayscale readers the live contrast tools serve you better.

Will you announce when it is ready?

Yes. When colorization ships it goes live on this page and the tools hub links to it. You can vote for it on the roadmap in the meantime.

MangaConverter runs on Kindle Comic Converter (KCC), the open-source engine, for the conversions that are live today. AI colorization is a planned addition in front of that pipeline, and this page will host it honestly once it works.
