Fill the screen edge to edge

A manga page and an e-reader screen are never quite the same shape, so a fitted page leaves a strip of white at the top and bottom or at the sides. There are three ways to deal with it: keep the strip, stretch the page to fill (which distorts it slightly), or crop the page to the screen shape so it fills edge to edge and loses a sliver of art at the edges. The third is the planned fill screen option, the wallpaper look KOReader users know. We are being straight with you: it is not live yet, so this page does not offer it.

What works today: fitted pages with the strip, and the stretch option that fills the screen by scaling the page. The engine underneath supports the crop; what is planned is passing it from the studio with a preview that shows what each page loses.

Fill screen is coming soon

This option is planned, not live yet. Use the stretch option in the meantime.

What fill screen will do

  1. Crop to the screen shape

Each page is scaled until it covers the whole screen and the overhang is trimmed evenly from both sides, so the art fills the display with no white strip.

  2. Show what is lost

The live preview outlines the trimmed strip on every page, because a sliver on a splash page is fine and a sliver through a speech bubble is not.

  3. Combine with the margin crop

Trimming the white border first means the fill crop removes border, not drawing, on most pages. The two work together and the preview shows the result.

  4. Until then: fit or stretch

A fitted page keeps every pixel with a white strip. The stretch page fills the screen with a small distortion instead of a crop. Both are live.

Honesty first

A crop that cuts through lettering with no warning is a defect. The option ships when the preview shows the trimmed strip on every page before you convert.

The live converter helps now

The stretch option, the margin crop and the Custom profile are all live, and the preview shows every page at the exact screen size of your reader.

Frequently asked questions

Can I crop pages to fill the screen right now?

Not yet, and we will not pretend otherwise. Fitting and stretching are live; cropping to the screen shape is the planned option.

How much of the page does it cut off?

It depends on the shapes. A typical manga page on a Paperwhite loses about three percent of its height; a wider comic page on a tall screen loses more from the sides.

Is this the same as the KOReader wallpaper setting?

It is the same idea applied at conversion time: the page is cropped once to the screen shape, so any reader shows it edge to edge, not only KOReader.

Will you announce when it is ready?

Yes. When the option ships it appears next to stretch and this page hosts it. You can vote for it on the roadmap in the meantime.

MangaConverter runs on Kindle Comic Converter (KCC), the open-source engine, which added the fill screen crop in version 11.1. Passing it from the studio is planned, and this page will host the option once it works.
