Fine tune how margins are cropped

The crop toggle trims the white border around every page, and for most scans the default strength is right. Some are not most scans. A page with a very light border wants a stronger crop, a page with art running to the edge wants a weaker one, a book with wide gutters between panels wants those gutters trimmed too, and a reader may want a sliver of margin kept so the art does not touch the bezel. The planned crop tuning exposes those four dials. We are being straight with you: it is not live yet, so this page does not offer it.

What works today: the crop toggle at its default strength, preset on the crop margins page, with the live preview showing each cropped page. The engine underneath already takes every value on this page; what is planned is the control in the studio.

Crop tuning is coming soon

These controls are planned, not live yet. Use the crop toggle at its default strength in the meantime.

What crop tuning will do

  1. Crop strength

How aggressively a border is judged to be empty. Stronger finds faint borders on grey scans; weaker protects art that reaches the page edge.

  2. Keep a margin

A percentage of border kept back after the crop, so the art sits a little inside the screen edge instead of against it.

  3. Minimum crop area

A crop smaller than this is skipped, so a page that is already tight is left alone instead of being nudged by a few pixels.

  4. Trim between panels

Removes the empty strip between panels on a page as well as the outer border, so the panels grow a little larger on the screen.

Honesty first

A crop dial without the preview would mean converting to find out what was lost. The controls ship when the preview shows every page at the chosen strength.

The live converter helps now

The crop toggle, the live preview and the per-page view in the Pages tab are live, and the crop margins page presets the toggle for you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the crop strength right now?

Not yet, and we will not pretend otherwise. The crop toggle runs at its default strength today, and the preview shows exactly what it trims.

Will a stronger crop cut into the art?

It can on a page where the art touches the edge, which is why the dial is paired with the live preview and a keep margin setting. The default is tuned not to.

What does trimming between panels change?

A page with four panels and wide gutters spends a fifth of the screen on white. Trimming the gutters lets each panel scale up a step without any cropping of the drawings.

Will you announce when it is ready?

Yes. When the controls ship they appear under the crop toggle and this page hosts them. You can vote for them on the roadmap in the meantime.

MangaConverter runs on Kindle Comic Converter (KCC), the open-source engine, whose cropping options already travel with every job. The studio controls for them are planned, and this page will host them once they work.
