Convert comics to black and white for e-ink

On a grayscale e-reader, color pages you never converted properly read as muddy soup: the panel maps colors to gray however it likes, and detail drowns. The planned standalone tool does one job well: take a color comic and produce a clean grayscale version with tuned levels, dithering where it helps, and file sizes that reflect the dropped color channels. We are being straight with you: as a standalone tool it is not live yet, so this page does not offer it.

The important live fact: when you convert for a grayscale device here today, the pipeline already applies a proper e-ink grayscale pass, with gamma correction tuned for screentone and linework. What is planned is the tool-shaped version: grayscale as the product, CBZ in, grayscale CBZ out, no device conversion required.

What the grayscale tool will do

  1. Strip color deliberately

    A tuned luminance conversion rather than a naive desaturate, so reds and blues that carry contrast in color do not collapse into the same gray.

  2. Tune for e-ink

    Levels and gamma set for reflective screens, the same discipline the conversion pipeline applies, with dithering where flat gradients would band.

  3. Shrink the files

    Grayscale pages compress harder than color ones, so a stripped volume is also a smaller volume, useful on devices with modest storage.

  4. Until then: device conversion does this today

    Convert with your grayscale Kindle or Kobo profile and the e-ink grayscale pass happens as part of the job. The standalone tool changes the packaging, not the quality.

Honesty first

The grayscale pass itself is real and running inside the converter today; what does not exist yet is the standalone tool shape. This page says which is which, and hosts the tool when it ships.

The live conversion covers most needs

If the goal is reading on a grayscale device, a normal device-profile conversion already delivers the tuned grayscale result. The standalone tool mainly serves people who want the stripped file itself.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a comic to black and white here right now?

As part of a device conversion, yes: pick a grayscale Kindle, Kobo or reMarkable profile and the output is properly grayscaled for that screen today. The standalone CBZ-in, grayscale-CBZ-out tool is the planned part.

Why not just let the e-reader display color pages in gray?

Because the device maps color to gray naively at display time: hues with similar brightness merge, panels go muddy and text in colored boxes sinks. A deliberate conversion keeps contrast where the art needs it.

What about color e-readers?

Keep the color: the converter has profiles for the Kindle Colorsoft and the color Kobos, and a page about keeping comic color. Grayscale conversion is for the grayscale panels, which is still most e-readers.

Will you announce when the standalone tool is ready?

Yes. When it ships it goes live on this page and the tools hub links to it. You can vote for it on the roadmap in the meantime.

MangaConverter runs on Kindle Comic Converter (KCC), the open-source engine, whose pipeline already performs the e-ink grayscale pass during device conversions today. The standalone tool is a planned repackaging of that step, and this page will host it honestly once it works.
