Set the gamma and black point for e-ink

The contrast toggle fixes most washed-out scans: it stretches the tones so blacks are black and whites are white. Some volumes need more than a stretch. A scan whose midtones sit too light wants a gamma curve, a scan with grey ink wants its black point anchored lower, and a colour page may or may not want the same treatment as the grey ones. The planned controls expose exactly those three choices: a gamma value, a black point, and a switch for colour pages. We are being straight with you: it is not live yet, so this page does not offer it.

What works today: the contrast toggle runs auto contrast and auto level on every page, which is the right answer for the common case. The engine underneath already understands gamma and the colour switch; what is planned is the control in the studio and a preview that shows the result.

Gamma and black point controls are coming soon

These controls are planned, not live yet. Use the contrast toggle in the meantime.

What the gamma and black point controls will do

  1. A gamma slider

Values below 1 darken the midtones, values above lighten them. Auto stays the default; the slider is for a scan the toggle leaves grey.

  2. An anchored black point

Pick the tone that should become pure black. Everything darker clips to black, so faint ink and screentone gain weight on a grey screen.

  3. Colour pages, your call

Autocontrast on a colour page can shift its hues. The planned switch lets colour pages keep their tones while the grey pages get the full correction.

  4. Until then: the contrast toggle

Better contrast is one switch in the studio, preset on the e-ink contrast page. It covers flat scans well and the live preview shows the result before you convert.

Honesty first

A gamma control without a preview would ship blind edits. The controls arrive when the preview shows every page with the curve applied.

The live converter helps now

The contrast toggle, greyscale output and the live preview are all live today, and the e-ink contrast page presets the toggle for you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I set gamma or a black point right now?

Not yet, and we will not pretend otherwise. The contrast toggle applies auto contrast and auto level today, and for most scans that is the whole fix.

What is the difference between gamma and contrast?

Contrast stretches the ends of the tone range apart. Gamma bends the middle: it decides how dark a mid grey prints without touching the pure black and white ends.

Will the preview show the change?

That is the plan. A gamma or black point change you cannot see before converting is a guess, so the controls ship with the live preview reflecting them.

Will you announce when it is ready?

Yes. When the controls ship they appear next to the contrast toggle and this page hosts them. You can vote for them on the roadmap in the meantime.

MangaConverter runs on Kindle Comic Converter (KCC), the open-source engine, whose gamma and autocontrast options already travel with every job. The studio controls for them are planned, and this page will host them once they work.
