How to Read CBZ Files on Android

Android doesn't open CBZ files natively, but it has some of the best free comic reader apps on any platform, so the fix is one install away. Below: the apps worth using, how to actually get your files open, and the cases where converting the CBZ to EPUB — for an e-reader app, for Google Play Books, or for an e-ink Android tablet — beats reading the archive directly.

Step 1: pick a reader app

Solid free options on the Play Store (checked August 2026):

• Perfect Viewer — the veteran Android comic reader: fast, dense with options, handles CBZ/CBR/CB7 and folders, right-to-left mode, dual-page landscape view.
• CDisplayEx — simple and quick, named after the classic Windows reader; good default choice if Perfect Viewer feels like a cockpit.
• Mihon (successor to Tachiyomi) — built for manga library management; reads local archives organized by series.

All of them handle the things comics need: reading direction, fit-to-width vs fit-to-screen, page thumbnails and remembering your position.

Step 2: open your files

1. Copy the CBZ to the device — USB cable, Google Drive, or a direct download.
2. Open the reader app and point its file browser at the folder (most apps scan a folder you choose and list everything as a library).
3. For manga, switch the reading direction to right-to-left in the app's settings; the archive itself carries no direction info.

CBR files work identically in all these apps — the formats differ only in archive type (CBR vs CBZ).

When converting to EPUB is the better move

Reading the raw CBZ is fine on a phone or tablet, but three situations call for a real EPUB instead:

• You live in an e-book app. Google Play Books accepts EPUB uploads and syncs position across devices; Moon+ Reader and similar apps handle EPUB beautifully. None of them open CBZ.
• You're on an e-ink Android tablet (Boox and friends). Pages sized and contrast-tuned for the panel read far better than a raw archive scaled at render time.
• A Kindle or Kobo is also in the mix. One conversion produces the file your e-reader needs; the Android side can read the same EPUB.

The Kindle and Kobo apps won't help

A common dead end: trying to open a CBZ with the Kindle or Kobo app on Android. Neither app reads comic archives, and the Kindle app only shows personal documents that went through Send to Kindle.
