How to Read Manga on a reMarkable

You can read manga on a reMarkable, and it is genuinely one of the best screens for it — but not by copying your files over as-is. The reMarkable 1, reMarkable 2 and Paper Pro open only two formats, EPUB and PDF, and a raw CBZ won't transfer at all while a raw manga PDF renders as a shrunken print-sized page with no right-to-left paging. The fix is a one-time conversion: rebuild each page for the reMarkable's screen and send the resulting EPUB over with the official app. Here is the whole process.

Why the reMarkable is quietly great for manga

The reMarkable 2 has a 10.3 inch, 1404 x 1872 greyscale e-ink display. That is a larger canvas than almost any dedicated e-reader — a full manga page fits at close to the size it was printed at, without the squinting that 6 inch Kindles force on dense panels. Manga is already black-and-white line art, so greyscale e-ink costs you nothing the way it does with color comics. The hardware is a near-perfect match; the software just doesn't meet manga halfway, which is what the rest of this guide fixes.

Why raw files fail

• CBZ/CBR/CB7 don't open at all. The reMarkable accepts only EPUB and PDF (checked August 2026). Comic archives are rejected on transfer.
• Raw manga PDFs render badly. A scanned volume carries print-sized, print-resolution pages. The reMarkable scales the whole page to fit, which softens line art, and there is no reading-direction metadata, so a right-to-left series pages the wrong way.
• Generic EPUBs aren't much better. An EPUB made without a device profile still ships mismatched image sizes that get rescaled on-device.

What you want is an EPUB whose pages are already the reMarkable's exact pixel grid, with manga reading order stamped into the book.

Step 1: convert with the reMarkable profile

Step 2: transfer to the reMarkable

The reMarkable has no email-a-file route like Kindle, but transfer is easy:

• Desktop app (Windows/macOS): drag the EPUB into your library and it syncs to the tablet over your reMarkable account.
• my.remarkable.com: upload from any browser, no install needed — handy if you converted on a machine without the app.
• Mobile app: share the EPUB into the reMarkable app on your phone.

Either way the volume appears in your library within moments, and it syncs across your devices like any other document.

Reading it

Open the book and page through it like a normal document. Because manga mode stamped right-to-left order into the EPUB, the page sequence runs the correct direction for Japanese manga. Each page fills the screen edge to edge — no zooming, no panning, no margins wasted on a page the device had to shrink.

One honest caveat: the reMarkable's e-ink refresh is tuned for writing, not rapid page flips, so turns are a beat slower than on a Kindle or Kobo. For reading manga a page at a time it is a non-issue; it is worth knowing before you expect phone-like snappiness.

Troubleshooting

• Pages look soft or fuzzy: the wrong device profile was used, so the reMarkable is rescaling. Re-convert with the reMarkable profile.
• Pages turn the wrong direction: manga mode was off during conversion. There is no on-device fix — re-convert with it enabled.
• The file won't transfer: you're moving a CBZ/CBR directly. Convert to EPUB first; the reMarkable simply doesn't accept comic archives.
• A volume is enormous: print-resolution scans carry far more pixels than the screen can show. The device-profile conversion downsizes pages to the screen grid, which also shrinks the file substantially.
