Kindle Won't Open Your Comic File? Here's Why, Case by Case

When a Kindle won't open a comic file, it is almost always one of four specific problems: the file is a CBZ/CBR/CB7 (Kindles cannot open comic archives at all), it's an EPUB you copied over USB (sideloaded EPUBs don't appear in the library), it's a MOBI you emailed (Send to Kindle stopped accepting MOBI in 2022), or it's over the roughly 50MB email limit. Find your case below — each has a different fix, though most of them end at the same place: convert to an EPUB built for your Kindle and send that.

Case 1: the file is a CBZ, CBR or CB7

This is the most common case. Comic archives are just zipped (CBZ), rarred (CBR) or 7-zipped (CB7) folders of page images — and no Kindle model reads any of them (checked August 2026). The file either refuses to transfer, or sits on the device as an inert entry that won't open. There is no app to install or setting to flip; the format is simply unsupported.

Fix: convert the archive to EPUB. Doing it with a device profile is strictly better than a generic conversion, because pages get resized to your Kindle's actual screen and manga keeps right-to-left page order. Case 2: it's an EPUB, but it doesn't show up after USB copy

Counterintuitive but true: Kindles support EPUB, yet an EPUB copied straight into the USB documents folder typically never appears in your library. Amazon supports EPUB as an upload format — Send to Kindle converts it to the Kindle's internal format on the way in — not as a file the reader opens natively off the disk (checked August 2026).

Fix: deliver the EPUB through Send to Kindle (email, app, or the web uploader) instead of raw USB copy. If the EPUB itself is the problem — pages render tiny or in the wrong direction — run it through EPUB to Kindle first to rebuild it for your model's screen; converters here accept EPUB as input, not just comic archives.

Case 3: it's a MOBI and Send to Kindle rejects it

MOBI was the Kindle format for years, so plenty of comic archives out there are old MOBI conversions. Amazon dropped MOBI from Send to Kindle in 2022 (checked August 2026), so emailing one now bounces.

Fix: don't hunt for MOBI workarounds — convert whatever source you have (or the MOBI-era CBZ it came from) to EPUB, which is what Send to Kindle wants today.

Case 4: the file is over ~50MB and email silently fails

Send to Kindle rejects files over about 50MB (checked August 2026), and comics hit that cap constantly because scanned pages are print-resolution. The symptom is a comic that "never arrives" with little explanation.

Fix: two options. USB sideloading of a Kindle-native file has no size limit. Better: re-convert with a device profile — pages downscaled to a 1072 x 1448 or 1236 x 1648 screen are far smaller than print scans, and the volume usually drops under the email limit.
